FRAMINGHAM STATE COLLEGE SOFTBALL EARNS BIRTH IN NCAA DIVISION III SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Framingham, MA – The Framingham State College softball team captured their first ever Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament Championship on Sunday, as they defeated top seeded Bridgewater State in the 7th and deciding game of the tournament.  With the win, the Rams (21-19) have qualified for the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament for the first time in school history.

Senior right-hander DeAnna Curtis (Lakeville, MA) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout in the deciding game of the MASCAC Tournament to lead the Rams to the title.  Curtis was dominating for the Rams throughout the tournament as she went 3-0 with a 0.84 earned run average.  In 25 innings of work she struck out 17 batters and opponents batted just .180 against her.

Framingham scored the only run of the deciding game in the top of the first as leadoff batter Christina Sullivan (Weymouth, MA) reached first on a catcher’s interference and moved to third as BSC botched a sacrifice bunt attempt off the bat of sophomore Colleen Clancy (Lynn, MA).  With runners at first and third with nobody out, senior Kristina Cochrane (Plainville, MA) lofted a sacrifice fly to deep leftfield plating Sullivan with the only run of the game.

The Rams made it to the championship round by defeating top seed Bridgewater State 4-2 in the opening round Thursday afternoon in Bridgewater and defeating second seed Westfield State 4-2 on Saturday to move on.  The Rams dropped the first game on Sunday 7-1 as junior Kelly Knox (Framingham, MA) took the loss and was touched for 6 runs in three innings of relief, before the Rams came back to pick up the thrilling 1-0 win in the deciding game.

Pairings for the NCAA Tournament were announced this morning and the Rams will be the number eight seed in the New England Softball Regional which will be held at Rhode Island College in Providence, RI.  The Rams begin play on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. against the top seeded Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, who won the Little East Conference Tournament Title this past weekend.  Also in the New England Regional are #2 Tufts, #3 Wellesley, #4 Keene State, #5 Endicott, #6 Misericordia (PA), and #7 Emerson.
