OFFICE OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT Director, LaDonna BridgesAPPEALS PROCESS Any student who believes that effective accommodations have not been provided or who believes his or her rights have been denied by reason of a disability is permitted to file a grievance. If a student wishes to challenge an Office of Academic Support decision of accommodations, or has a complaint about the accommodations they are receiving, they should notify the Director of Academic Support as soon as possible. The director will promptly evaluate the situation and attempt an informal resolution. If the director is unable to resolve the matter, or if the student disagrees with the outcome, an appeal can be filed for review by the Academic Accommodations Advisory Board. The Academic Accommodations Advisory Board, comprised of faculty, administrators and a student representative, provides ongoing review of practice by the Office of Academic Support. In cases where a student’s request for accommodations has been denied, the Academic Accommodations Advisory Board serves as an appeals board. The Director of Academic Support chairs the advisory board. The complaint should contain the name and address of the person filing it and a brief description of the issue in question. At least three members of the Academic Accommodations Advisory Board will convene a special meeting within seven days to meet with the complainant and, if necessary, the other party involved in the complaint. A written summary of the resolution will be provided by the Director of Academic Support upon completion of the appeals process. If the grievance is against the Director of Academic Support, the above procedures are followed with the exception that the initial complaint will be made to the Director of the Center for Academic Support and Advising (CASA). In such cases, the Director of CASA will chair the appeals process. For further information, please contact Ms. LaDonna Bridges at 508-626-4906 or lbridges@frc.mass.edu |
