The Forum for the two days of workshop

“Big Ink for Big Hearts” is a two-day participatory art event on campus in which the travelling artist group Big Ink brings their custom-designed giant mobile printing press "Big Tuna" to FSU to print 16 large-scale woodblocks (up to 4 feet by 8 feet!) that are created in advance by students, faculty, staff and/or community members addressing the Arts & Ideas theme of "Courage and Resilience.” The groups develop images for their woodcuts that may highlight key figures from historical or contemporary courageous movements or initiatives, or that may explore more personal stories of courage and resilience.

Lawrence “Larry” Jackson Discusses Reparations

By Kaitlin Carman, Publications Intern

Microphone in hand, guest-speaker Lawrence “Larry” Jackson stood before his audience. With feet flat on the ground, in accordance with the technicalities of flat-footed singing, Mahalia Jackson’s “Trouble of the World” was propelled from deep inside his chest – from the soul – to the ears of his congregation.

His introductory song is the same one that he sung before 250,000 people in Boston when Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of incarceration – and he was performing it to members of the Framingham State University community as part of his immersive conversation about reparations.

On Feb. 15, the Center for Inclusive Excellence (CIE), in collaboration with the Henry Whitmore Library, hosted the semester’s first Diversity Dialogues event which featured Watson.

Kathleen Barnard, student engagement coordinator, introduced Watson as an activist, talented musician, a Berklee College of Music Voice educator for over 25 years, Residence artist at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law school for 15 years, and the founder and artistic director of Save Ourselves Productions and Consulting.

His compositions include Reparations, which was first written and released to the public in 1985 and reissued in 2023 for Black History Month, according to Barnard.

The word reparation, “in the most classic definition, means to repair – to offer compensation when someone has been done wrong,” said Watson.

He likened car insurance claims to reparations - that agencies will award victims financial compensation for emotional and physical repercussions from such traumatic events.

“You going to tell me that those same men [actuaries] can’t put a price on the price African-descent people have paid because of the institution of slavery? That’s what reparations is about.”

He reminded audience members about the reparations Germany had to pay after WWII and how after the Trail of Tears, the United States government paid reparations to Indigenous groups.
