Sawaari

Midday Performance Series: Sawaari

March 13, 2024 at 1:30 p.m.
Forum, McCarthy Center

Sawaari explores the nexus of Indian taals, Arabic maqams, and trance music from North Africa and Italy, fully encompassing the varied interests and backgrounds of its band members: Fabio Pirozzolo (vocals and percussion), Jussi Reijonen (oud), Mike Rivard (sintir and double bass), Andy Bergman (sax, clarinet) and Amit Kavthekar (tabla). With an emphasis on rhythm, the music they create together has a searching, exploratory quality that brings together the meditative with the energetic, taking the listener from sparse tranquility to complex syncopations in a moment. Named for a word that means “to ride” in Urdu, Sawaari invites audiences to be transported into a world of rhythm and sound that knows no borders, no limitations.

Narcan Training Prepares Rams to Save Lives

By Kaitlin Carman, publications intern

Friends, family, neighbors – approximately 42% of Americans know someone who has died from an overdose.

It impacts us all.

If you were provided the tools and training required to save a life, would you seize the opportunity? About a dozen Framingham State University students did.

Harm Reduction Program Manager Sarah Fleming and Harm Reduction Specialist Kelsey Rodrigues of Program Rise, both FSU alumnae, led a Narcan training program to a group of students on Feb.27.

The duo covered topics including methods to reduce the risk of overdose, how to identify and respond to an opioid overdose, and to how to combat stigmas about substance use.

“Keep in mind, anyone can be a person who uses substances and having the knowledge or having someone sitting next to you who might have Narcan on them can make the difference between life and death,” said Fleming.

Students were provided with fentanyl testing strips, two kits containing two doses of Narcan, and face shields for rescue breathing after completing a post-training survey.

There were 100,000 drug overdoses in the United States with 2,559 of those confirmed opioid-related deaths Massachusetts alone in 2023, according to Fleming.

“What we’re seeing in drug trends is that, obviously there are people who use fentanyl, and we also know that on college campuses … it’s more common to be using pills or other things that you might not think are fentanyl but are cut with [it].”

They highlighted how important it is for people who use substances to test them for fentanyl. Rodrigues said it is a “strong synthetic opioid that is 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin.”

If one uses a substance not knowing it contains fentanyl, it could cost them their life.

Fleming said, “The whole goal of what we do is just to decrease the stigma and then understand that stigma is on college campuses too. …People use drugs for a lot of reasons. And if you don’t, maybe your friend does.”

Hayley Hadge, Support. Education. Action. Leadership. Strength. (S.E.A.L.S.) Peer Educator said she has participated in the Narcan training twice this year to brush up on her skills and stay up to date on current information.

Hadge said, “I think [NARCAN training] is super important – [substance use/abuse] is just like any other health issue to be aware of whether it’s mental health, physical health, and sexual health.

She added, “I think this is just as important as all of those things that we teach about.”

Katherine Scheidler's new publication Renegade Teacher: Inside School Walls with Standards and the Test will be described to provide insights about the national test, which has been considered poor, intrusive, and unfair. With her experience as a school district assistant superintendent, Scheidler studies the tests annually and sees them changing over the years to become better - and more needed today with learning lost during the pandemic school shutdown. Marcus Greene's creative work explores his interest in the formal construction of imaginary spaces - sometimes suggesting nature or physical science, sometimes mythical or archetypal environments, and sometimes suggesting passages to other dimensions.

Three Stories About Taking Up Space

Moth Story Slam: Taking up Space
FSU Women’s Affinity Group Spring Event
Date: Wednesday, April 3, 2024
Time: 11:45-12:45
Location: McCarthy College Center, Alumni Room

Three Stories about Taking Up Space

We are taking our inspiration from NPR’s The Moth/Radio Hour. The Moth features true stories told live on stage without scripts or notes. The stories may be humorous, heartbreaking or poignant but they will captivate, surprise and delight the audience with their honesty, bravery and humor.

Our theme for the Spring Event is, Taking Up Space, defined by Alex Jenny as, “Giving yourself permission to make room for your authentic emotions and feelings and boundaries. When you take up space, you don’t feel like you need to succumb to the pressure to make yourself small, hide parts of yourself, or – if you’re a person of color – to subjugate yourself to white supremacy and values, in order to move through the world.”

Following the stories, we will open it up for discussion.

Storytellers
Keri Straka, Professor of Art
Jen Lin, Associate Professor of Psychology
Kim Dexter, Assistant Vice President of Human Resources & Equal Opportunity

We provide a light lunch of soup, salad, bread, fruit, dessert, coffee and tea at the start of the hour and the opportunity to say hello to colleagues. The hour promises to be interesting, enlightening and delicious.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact any of the Women’s Affinity group* members: Peg Charbonnier, Christine Denaro, Lynn Gray, Debbie Hogan, Meghan Maxfield and Silvia Teixeira.
