Adam Sutton will lead a discussion on The 7 Laws of Enough

Emotional Wellness Book Discussions and Practice

Now more than ever, finding more joy and sustaining positive focus requires us to reassess and rewrite the stories we tell about ourselves and each other. In collaboration with the Adam Sutton Group, we are offering interactive conversations that explore concepts presented in the book The Seven Laws of Enough: Cultivating a Life of Sustainable Abundance by Gina LaRoche and Jennifer Cohen. The three session book discussion group will focus on practical strategies for defining what is truly “enough” for us personally and professionally, and how to help each other live our best lives yet!

All four events will take place between 3:30 and 5 p.m.:

October 6: Alumni Room - Open to Faculty, Staff & Student
October 13: O'Connor Hall Room 120B CIE Lounge - Open to Faculty & Staff
October 20: Alumni Room - Open to Faculty & Staff
October 27: Alumni Room - Open to Faculty & Staff

This event is sponsored by the Arts and Ideas series, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Enhancement, and FSU’s Campus Professional Development Program.

A limited number of copies of The Seven Laws of Enough are available on a first come, first serve basis, and can be picked up in Dwight Hall, room 306.

Soe Lin Post Explores the Relationship Between Sounds and Graphics

By Leighah Beausoleil, publications intern

Through the graphic design work of Soe Lin Post, director of design at Wellesley College, Framingham State’s Mazmanian Gallery attendees saw sound come to life.

By breaking down and separating sound bites from their original meanings, Post uses computer programming to generate art with a whole new purpose.

“It's this act of recontextualization that speaks and that sparks my creativity,” said Post.

He said he found his interest in sound through his love of music and various instruments.

Though he originally studied philosophy in college, Post said he began helping a publications department that introduced him to the world of graphic design and he went back to earn his master’s degree in the subject.

The relationship he has formed between these sounds and graphics is what Post has coined “Typosonic.”

He said much of his art comes as a result of experimenting with different softwares and combining his findings with the visual properties of sound, including amplification, duration, pitch, and timbre.

As an example, Post described his process for one of his Typosonic projects.

In this art piece he studied the motion a mouth makes when saying a letter of the alphabet. Post then took these graphical forms and input them into Adobe Illustrator and blended different letter combinations into unified graphics that represented a word such as “hello.”

Post added blending allows for the manipulation of elements that in turn uncover aspects of a project that the artist “normally might not be able to see.”

Graphic Design Professor Stephanie Grey, who had gone to graduate school with Post, said much of the Typosonic work he has done stems from his thesis that focused on typography and sound.

“Whether it be Typosonic experiments or an artist poster, he can't unsee these unique juxtapositions of meaning,” Grey said. “They are part of him and our collective understanding of the world is better for it.”

The Edward Brodney Collection: WWII Art of the South Pacific

October 15, 2022 | 1 pm - 4 pm

Benefiting the Framingham State University Student Veterans' Scholarship Fund: $25 Suggested Donation

Take an exclusive look at selected works of artist Edward Brodney documenting his experiences of World War II in the South Pacific. Framingham State holds the entire collection of WWII works of Mr. Brodney, thanks to a generous donation by his family. His daughter Jeanne will be speaking briefly about her father and the importance of his work during the event. Mr. Brodney has murals in the Massachusetts State House and Newton Town Hall and was profiled by the New York Times and Boston Globe upon his death in 2002.

About the Artist:

Boston native, Edward Brodney, was the first Newton resident drafted into World War II. Initially a medic, he served in the South Pacific from 1942 - 1944. He earned several promotions and was assigned to public relations. His artwork accompanied the articles being sent to hometown
newspapers. His World War II paintings depicted soldiers in their everyday activities: Repairing planes, carrying supplies, enjoying days off, Air Force Aces and preparing for battle.

Returning home from war, Brodney opened an art and estate gallery in Boston and ran it for thirty years. At the age of 65, he retired to his love of painting. Subjects include scenes of Boston, seascape, still life, and polo matches.

Two of his earlier works, murals commissioned by the WPA, are in the State House in Boston.
