FSU Donates Gifts for the Holiday Season

Thanks to the generosity of the FSU community, more than 50 children in need from the MetroWest area will be given items off of their wish lists this holiday season.

“The involvement this year makes me really happy, as this is my first time doing this program,” said Nellie Miller, Student Experience Administrative Manager and coordinator of the Giving Tree program.

This program is hosted by the Center for Student Experience and Career Development and the United Way of Tri-County.

According to the United Way of Tri-County website, “Over the years with tremendous help from individuals, local companies, and their employees, the United Way of Tri-County has supplied gifts and given hope to thousands of families. Our holiday program focuses on children in families that are struggling to make ends meet.”

This year the Framingham State students, faculty, and staff gifted 50 children items from their wish lists.

Some common items the children wished for were Barbies, Legos, Doc McStuffin toys, Lionel Messi jerseys, and soccer balls.

Miller said almost all the kids wanted, scooters, “but we just don't have the space for them.”

United Way of Tri-County “works with 29 nonprofit community partners that identify their client families that cannot afford to give presents to their children this year,” according to the organization's website.

“Each family submits a wish list for their children and many are basic: warm jackets, new pants, simple toys, and games. “

Miller said the campus community’s participation in this program made this year’s drive extremely successful.

Well over 40 offices and individuals volunteered to sponsor these children and families. Each donating party was given a Wishlist of three items from a child that also included their clothing sizes and their favorite colors.

Sara Gallegos, executive director of the Center for Student Experience & Career Development, said, “Many people love to do it, they look forward to it every year.”

She said it provides an opportunity for “Good community building.”

Miller said “Hopefully this drive will inspire other people to want to do more” for those in need.
