The Struggle to Gain Voting Rights in the United States

By Soren Colstrup, publications intern

Women have been voting in the United States for 101 years and the last 180 years remain a narrative of the progress, according to Rebecca Hawk, Director of Community Education and English Language Programs at FSU.

“History is not what happened, it’s the story that someone tells you about what happened and that is why a lot of the history books that I read when I grew up didn’t include much about women’s suffrage,” said Hawk.

“It’s important that we take the time to recognize what has gone before us and the people who have met incredible obstacles to bring us to where we are today. As women, we have representative rights and we can vote,” Hawk added.

The lecture, hosted by The Center for Inclusive Excellence as part of Women’s Month, focused on the role of Women’s Suffrage and how it was influenced by the struggles of other underrepresented groups.

Hawk explained that figures like Fredrick Douglas and Sojourner Truth played a very important role in prioritizing Women’s Suffrage as well as fighting for racial equality. Their support was vital to shedding light on the movement.

Native American women were also some of the earliest to call out the exclusion of women in leadership positions. Letters were often sent to political leaders of the highest order.
Hawk explained that she had once read a letter that was addressed to Benjamin Franklin that said, “Political leaders ought to mind what a woman says.”

President Woodrow Wilson was one of the key figures in woman suffrage, who would later recognize the pivotal role women played in the war.

Hawk explained, “Wilson told the suffragists to be patient, then after intense and persistent pressure from suffragists’ communication tactics, he thought more about it.”

These communication tactics included flyers with powerful messages which demonstrated the role woman had taken on during the war.

The flyers featured various questions like “Who shares the cost of war?” “Who face death in order to give life to men?” “Who must suffer agony for every soldier killed?”

These questions were answered by one simple word—Women.

In August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment finally guaranteed women the right to vote. However, that did not end voter suppression in the United States for good and many people of color are still subject to voter suppression today.

Director of Inclusive Excellence Initiatives, Dr. Patricia Birch said, “This also remains a barrier for immigrants who are contributing to society and paying taxes, but still can’t vote.”

Woman at War (2018) is an Icelandic gem. No one suspects that Halla, a mild-mannered choir-leader, is the eco-terrorist battling corporate greed and government lies. Fueled by her fierce convictions, Halla displays extraordinary ingenuity as a solo crusader for the environment. This is cinematic artistry at its best!

The author Zaki graduated from Framingham High School and now is a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. He is the Director of the Social Neuroscience Laboratory. The book is about – “Empathy is in short supply. Isolation and tribalism are rampant. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us, but find it easy to hate them. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even thirty years ago. In 2006, Barack Obama said that the United States is suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then, things only seem to have gotten worse.

It doesn’t have to be this way. In this groundbreaking book, Jamil Zaki shares cutting-edge research, including experiments from his own lab, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait—something we’re born with or not—but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort. He also tells the stories of people who embody this new perspective, fighting for kindness in the most difficult of circumstances. We meet a former neo-Nazi who is now helping extract people from hate groups, ex-prisoners discussing novels with the judge who sentenced them, Washington police officers changing their culture to decrease violence among their ranks, and NICU nurses fine-tuning their empathy so that they don’t succumb to burnout.

Thursday, 4/8
• Book Discussion on How to be an Antiracist @ 2:00 through Zoom. Contact Samantha Westall (swestall@framingham.edu) for details.

Student Recognition Opportunity

If your area/department will be honoring students for their achievements, Campus Engagement is pleased to announce a special opportunity to support you.

More than ever we need to pause and acknowledge that our students have navigated a very challenging academic year – especially students who are graduating, accomplished academic honors, received awards … and much more.

On May 7, during the annual Sandbox program, we will be hosting a booth designated for Unprecedented Achievements. We will work with you to coordinate the pick-up of certificates, cords, etc. and/or provide a photo spot for student recognition. Our goal is to create a low maintenance way to celebrate and give our students a moment in the spotlight. The photos from the booth will (hopefully) be used for a special celebratory video shared at the end of the academic year. All you need to do is provide us with information – you do not need to be present at the booth.

Interested? Please complete this form to get on our list for more information and how to participate. Submissions DUE Friday, April 23.

(We are in the preliminary stages and ask for your patience while the actual Sandbox event details get COVID safety details ironed out.) Thank you!
