Bethany Hill Reading Buddies

Bethany Hill Reading Buddies is an afterschool reading program created through a partnership between Framingham State University and Bethany Hill Place. Bethany Hill Place offers safe, affordable, educational housing to more than 150 individuals and families every year, many of whom have experienced homelessness, addiction, violence and loss in Framingham, MA.

Interested Framingham State University students are recruited and trained to serve as reading buddies, academic role models and mentors to the children living at Bethany Hill Place. This program places an emphasis on making reading a fun, enjoyable experience for the children involved.

 

The role of a Bethany Hill Reading Buddy is to model a love for literature to the children by making reading a fun, enjoyable experience regardless of reading level or ability.

 

Qualifications to serve as a mentor are as follows:

-          Priority consideration is given to first generation FSU students.

-          Desire to serve as reading role buddy and role model.

-          Ability to work with diverse populations.

-          Must possess interpersonal skills.

-          Genuine interest in working with children, aged 6 – 12 years old.

-          Commitment to serve as a reading buddy for the entire academic year.

 

Programming occurs once a week for one hour at Bethany Hill Place in Framingham, MA. Transportation is provided.
