FSU Opens New Center for Honors Program

A large group of students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered on campus recently to officially open the new FSU Honors Center at 22 Adams Road. The center will serve as home to Framingham State’s growing Honors Program, which was recently accepted into the Commonwealth Honors Program.

“I can’t think of any wiser investment a University can make than investing in its Honors Program, because the students give so much back to the University,” President Timothy J. Flanagan said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Framingham State University Honors Program is designed to provide academically talented students with the opportunity to enrich their educational experience with courses both within and outside of their major program of study. Courses bearing the "Honors" designation are drawn from a wide range of disciplines and are designed to be intensive and intellectually challenging. Honors courses draw upon students' analytical and creative talents.

Framingham State’s program grew by 40 percent between fall 2010 and
fall 2011.

“This fall we welcomed not only our largest, but our most accomplished and most talented class,” said English Professor Carolyn Maibor, director of the program. “We have already begun to expect great things from them.”

The new center, located next to North Hall, provides the program with more meeting and planning space.

“This home will help shape us into an even more dynamic program by allowing us to communicate more directly with students,” Maibor said.

Alumni Invited to Public Lecture by Dr. Pepper Schwartz

Framingham State University will host acclaimed sex researcher Dr. Pepper Schwartz on campus Monday, March 5, for a day of roundtables, lectures and presentations. The feature event will be a public talk at 7 p.m. entitled “From Hooking Up to Viagra: The Sexual Life Cycle,” in the Dwight Hall Performing Arts Center. The talk is open to alumni and will be followed by a book signing.

Dr. Schwartz, a sociologist at the University of Washington and author of books ranging from American Couples to Love Between Equals to Prime, is well known for her insightful and entertaining research-based examinations of sex, romance, and couplehood. She is coauthor, with Framingham State University professor Virginia Rutter, of the 2012 book, The Gender of Sexuality: Exploring Sexual Possibilities. Dr. Schwartz’s Web site is found here.

“Pepper Schwartz helps audiences of every age to be fearless about sex—as a topic for study and as a meaningful component of people’s lives at every age,” explains Dr. Rutter, who invited Dr. Schwartz to campus as part of FSU’s innovative Linked Learning Communities that develop interdisciplinary and extracurricular approaches to academic topics. FSU history professor Bridgette Sheridan and Dr. Rutter are working intensively with students and the FSU community on “The Making of Sexualities,” and Dr. Schwartz will be meeting with FSU students enrolled in their courses.

Dr. Schwartz has been an advice columnist for Glamour Magazine, PerfectMatch.com and is currently AARP’s sex and relationship expert. As recently as January, Dr. Schwartz was featured in The Today Show and Huffington Post discussing results from a national AARP study of American’s sex lives over age 50. She has won multiple awards for her scholarship, books, and public service.
