The main goal of the Biology major is to provide students with a broad foundation of knowledge in several key areas including organismal biology, cell biology, genetics, physiology and evolution. For that reason, all Biology majors are required to complete a core curriculum of twelve (12) courses. This Biology core consists of seven courses in biology and five in chemistry and mathematics.
Additional courses are required of Biology majors in all concentrations. The number and distribution of electives required for completion of a Biology major varies according to the concentration selected by the student. Biology electives are organized in five Groups labeled A-E:
Group A: Cellular and Molecular Biology
Group B: Organismal Diversity Electives
Group C: Physiology
Group D: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Group E: Advanced Biology
