Major Requirements
The English major consists of twelve courses, as follows:
- ENGL 204 Literary Study
- One writing or journalism course
- One literature course from Group A (early British literature)
- One literature course from Group B (modern British literature)
- Two literature courses from Group C (American literature)
- One literature course from Group D (Classical, Biblical or Renaissance literature)
- One literature course from Group E (World literature)
- ENGL 422 Seminar in Literature
- Additional restricted electives to total twelve courses
All English majors must take four (4) literature courses at the 300- or 400-level in addition to ENGL 422 Seminar in Literature. One of the four courses may be a 300-level film course. Children’s literature courses do not satisfy this requirement. Students should focus on 300- and 400-level courses in the junior and senior years.
Foreign Language Requirement
Majors are required to have an intermediate knowledge of one foreign language. The intermediate level may be met in one of several ways:
- completion of a college-level Intermediate II language course
- placement test score of 80 or above
- waiver from the Chair of the Modern Language Department if high school academic language is other than English (usually applies to international students)
- four years of a single language in high school
- achievement of level 4 in a single language in high school.
