School Nutrition Specialist

Degree Requirements

This program leads to certification as a School Nutrition Association (SNA) “School Nutrition Specialist” (SNS). During two practicum internship experiences, students are required to work in a District of Excellence School as determined by SNA (District of Excellence School is a school nutrition program which has achieved this best practice standards quality designation by SNA). Any school district selected to participate in the practicum courses must meet this designation

The program requires a minimum of ten (10) courses: three (3) education core courses, four (4) nutrition core courses, and three (3) concentration courses, together with undergraduate prerequisite courses required for students without appropriate academic backgrounds. A minimum of ten (10) courses is required for graduation.

A timed online comprehensive examination is required as the student’s culminating experience.

Prerequisite Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in one of the following related fields: food and nutrition, hospitality, business, health education, with coursework covering the following areas:

  • basic nutrition (course must be within last five years)
  • foodservice systems
  • upper level management
  • managerial  finance (preferred) or accounting
  • biostatistics (preferred) or statistics

Internet Access & Software Applications
All courses are online and a computer with Internet access and current software applications is required. Framingham State University offers a purchase program.
