Framingham State University Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tom Kelley has been selected as the 2011 Division II-III Head Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Kelley was honored this month at the Gridiron Club’s annual Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night.
In 2011 Kelley guided the Rams to their first New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division Title with a 6-1 divisional record and their first appearance in the NEFC Championship game where they were narrowly defeated in overtime by Western New England.
“It’s really a wonderful honor to be recognized as coach of the year,” Kelley said. “It’s particularly sweet given that we had so many injuries this year. The coaching staff and everyone involved with the program really worked hard to get to the championship game, which is a place we’d never been before.”
The Rams finished the 2011 season 7-4 overall and captured their second straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championship. Kelley just completed his fifth season in his second stint as the Rams head coach and has a 35-42-1 overall coaching record. Kelley’s first tenure as the Rams head coach ran from 1982-84. “The football team’s unprecedented success over the past five years is a testament to the hard work put in by Coach Kelley and his staff,” FSU President Timothy Flanagan said. “He’s taken a struggling program and guided it to the top of the conference.”
Prior to Kelley resuming the head coaching duties in 2007, the Rams were just 4-41 in the previous five seasons. Since 2008, the team has finished .500 or above every year and is a combined 16-6 during the past two seasons. In 2010, the football team finished 9-2, and was victorious in the first bowl game in school history.
