Hundreds of people flocked to Bowditch Field on April 27 for the 2nd Annual Special Olympics MetroWest School Day Games hosted by Framingham State University.
The games are a collaboration between Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA), the Framingham State Athletic Department and the University’s Student Involvement and Leadership Development (SILD) Office. The Town of Framingham graciously agreed to allow the event to be held at the recently renovated Bowditch Field complex.
“The event was once again a huge success,” says Angel Seto, Framingham State’s coordinator of Clubs and Services. “It was great to see so many of our students volunteer and experience what the Special Olympics is all about.”
Special Olympics Massachusetts provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Athletes came from communities throughout MetroWest, including Framingham, Hudson, Natick, Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough and Bolton. They competed in several different events, including the long jump and 100-yard dash.
Staff from the Athletic Department and SILD spent weeks preparing for the games with help from more than 70 student volunteers at Framingham State, including members of the varsity athletic teams.
