Chinese Studies Program
FSU Chinese Program Title

The Chinese Studies Program now offers a Chinese Studies Concentration, and a Chinese Minor. The new Chinese Studies Concentration is unique in the state university system of Massachusetts, and is offered under the World Languages Major. 

Our mission and objectives are to train students to gain in-depth understanding of the Chinese language and culture, and acquire essential skills and knowledge in the various subject areas, with the ultimate goal of preparing them to cope with national needs and become global citizens.

Course Requirement

The Chinese Studies Program offers an array of courses that pave the way for students’ future careers and further graduate study.

Chinese Studies Concentration

The Chinese Studies Concentration is offered under the World Languages Major. Thirteen courses are required for the Chinese Studies Concentration, including (a) one major core requirement, (b) eleven required courses of Chinese language, culture, linguistics, and literature, and (c) one elective course. A. Major Core: One course

  • Language and Linguistics

B. Required Courses: Eleven courses
Four lower-level language courses

  • Elementary Chinese I
  • Elementary Chinese II
  • Intermediate Chinese I
  • Intermediate Chinese II

Four higher-level language courses

  • Advanced Chinese Composition and Conversation I
  • Advanced Chinese Composition and Conversation II
  • Chinese Language through Media
  • Topics in Chinese Language and Literature

One Chinese culture course

  • Chinese Writing System and Calligraphy

One Chinese linguistics course

  • Chinese Linguistics

One Chinese literature course

  • Chinese Literature in English Translation

C. Elective Courses: Choose one from the following

  • Chinese Culture through Films
  • Chinese Culture and Civilization in English Translation
  • Business Chinese
  • Contemporary Trends in the Sinophone World
  • Seminar in Chinese
  • Independent Study in Chinese
  • Internship Practicum in Chinese

Chinese Minor

Completion of Intermediate Chinese II (CHIN 272), or four language courses, and one other course. A total of five (5) courses is required for the Chinese Minor.

Required lower-level language courses: Four (4) courses

  • Elementary Chinese I
  • Elementary Chinese II
  • Intermediate Chinese I
  • Intermediate Chinese II

If a student demonstrates an equivalent level of proficiency, such as through a placement test, and is placed out of any 100- or 200-level language course, the student must take other higher-level courses from the following to fulfill the language requirement of four courses.

  • Advanced Chinese Composition and Conversation I
  • Advanced Chinese Composition and Conversation II
  • Chinese Language through Media
  • Topics in Chinese Language and Literature

Please consult the World Languages Department for the offering of other electives that count towards the Chinese minor.
