Framingham State University Appoints Dr. Marilyn A. Cleary as the new Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education

Apr 14, 2023

Framingham State University is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Marilyn A. Cleary as the new Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education, effective June 19th, 2023.

Since 2016, Cleary has served as the assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education at Worcester State University, where she was recently recognized for her efforts around diversity & inclusion.

In her current role, Cleary coordinates with faculty to ensure the division's program offerings remain diverse and relevant. She uses her extensive knowledge of post-traditional students to create an environment of belonging and success that bolsters the attainment of their educational goals. She also directly supports more than 200 students each semester through retention outreach and student mentor volunteering.

"We are thrilled that Dr. Cleary has agreed to lead Framingham State's Division of Graduate and Continuing Education," says FSU President Nancy Niemi. "The work of the division is complex and serves a wide-range of students, from current professionals seeking a master's degree, to older adults looking to finish up the remaining credits they need for their bachelor's degree.  She brings a wealth of experience to this work, and a record of using data and analytics to shape strategic planning."

Cleary has a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University. She is currently completing a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from the Racial Equity and Justice Institute at Clark University.

"Our graduate program coordinators and advisors are excited to work with Dr. Cleary and draw upon her knowledge and expertise," says FSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Kristen Porter-Utley. "I think everyone feels that we have an opportunity moving forward to strengthen our impact on the region with regard to supporting graduate students and adult learners."

Cleary says she is excited to be a part of an environment that has recently undergone change in leadership and is moving in an exciting direction.

"I really see this as an opportunity to do some meaningful and impactful work," she says. "My main interest is in creating educational pathways that will foster and support student success."

Framingham State University's commitment to antiracism also aligned well with Cleary's values.

"To see that Framingham has a similar value system to mine makes it an attractive place to work," she says. "I'm excited to get on campus and start into the relationship-building process."
