FSU Spanish Honors Society Earns National Recognition

Jul 20, 2023

Framingham State University's Nu Theta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi (the National Hispanic Honors Society) was chosen by the Sigma Delta Pi National Executive Committee as an Honor Chapter for the 2022-2023 academic year and recipients of the prestigious Phoenix Award.

Sigma Delta Pi consists of over 645 university chapters in 49 states. The FSU chapter began the academic year with only 4 members. These students, led by President Alejandra Londono, grew the organization into a model chapter selected for national recognition.

"I am so proud of this group of students," says Faculty Advisor Joanne Britland, professor of Spanish and Portuguese. "With limited numbers and resources, they collaborated and innovated to become a stand-out chapter on a national scale. They have put Framingham State University on the map for work on learning about and sharing Hispanic cultures, languages, and literatures."

In addition to more than doubling overall membership, the group successfully applied for a $1,000 grant from the University's Center for Inclusive Excellence, which enabled it to host six Spanish Language Tables, inviting members of the community to join them for lunch or dinner to practice Spanish together. Members of the group also volunteered at a local middle school to share information about the language and culture, and engaged with a group of Education majors from Chile who are studying at FSU as part of an exchange program.

In addition to President Alejandra Londono, members of FSU's Nu Theta Chapter include: Vice President Ingris Ramirez, PR/Marketing lead Emily Ferrucci, Treasurer Chasity Barone, Dyanna Londono, Victoria Gutiérrez, Jasmine Castillo, Camille Carvalho, Caroline Kimball and Laura Leiva.
