New Spring Exhibitions Opening at Framingham State’s Danforth Art Museum

Mar 4, 2022

This Spring the Danforth Art Museum at Framingham State University is celebrating contemporary photography in New England as well as the paintings of Suzanne Hodes with two new exhibitions opening on March 26th

Aspect Initiative, an on-line gallery founded by artist Steven Duede in 2016, has gathered some of the finest photographic voices working today, with a specific focus in New England. The exhibition 5 Years of Aspect Initiative will bring the work of 33 artists with distinctive voices and varied approaches to the medium of photography to the Museum. The exhibition will be curated by Duede and Danforth Museum Director and Curator Jessica Roscio.

"As one of the contributors to the Aspect Initiative over the years, this exhibition is very personal to me," says Roscio. "I'm excited to share it with the community."

Suzanne Hodes' mastery of figural abstraction and commitment to self-exploration and connecting to the darkness and light in the world around her is evident in each painting. Her exhibition, The Engaged Image, traces six decades of a highly engaged artist who cuts beneath the surface of her subject matter to create deeply personal and political works.

Danforth Museum is open to the public Tuesday-Sunday, Noon-5 p.m. Advanced registration is not required.

Enhanced safety measures are in place to protect all patrons and museum staff, including face covering and social distancing requirements, and hand sanitizing stations throughout the facility.

Full descriptions of the new exhibitions are below. For more information, visit danforth.framingham.edu.

5 Years of Aspect Initiative
March 26-June 5, 2022

This Spring, the Danforth Art Museum is celebrating contemporary photography in New England by recognizing five years of the online gallery Aspect Initiative. The Aspect Initiative Gallery, founded by artist Steven Duede in 2016, has gathered some of the finest photographic voices working today, with a specific focus in New England. Jessica Roscio, Director and Curator of the Danforth, has been a regular contributor to the gallery, and is curating this exhibition with Steven Duede. We are thrilled to bring the work of 33 artists with distinctive voices and varied approaches to the medium of photography to the Museum; this exhibition will occupy the Works on Paper and Hallway galleries.

Suzanne Hodes: The Engaged Image
March 26-June 5, 2022

Suzanne Hodes occupies a unique place in contemporary art in New England. She came of age in the company of artists heavily experimenting with metaphorical space–imagined landscapes versus a physical grounding in their surroundings–and her relationship to spaces shaped her painting throughout her career. Artists studying in Boston in the mid-twentieth century also became known for vibrant color, wild brushstrokes, and deep emotional connections inspired by German Expressionism. Yet, Hodes also identifies as a New York artist, heavily engaged with the movement, sights, and sounds of the urban environment. Her mastery of figural abstraction and commitment to self-exploration and connecting to the darkness and light in the world around her is evident in each painting. This exhibition traces six decades of a highly engaged artist who cuts beneath the surface of her subject matter to create deeply personal and political works.
